Welcome to "50 Years of Computing in Romania"!
Welcome to the first site dedicated solely to the history of computing technology in Romania: its many breaktroughs, as well at its stumbles. Here, you will find a wealth of information about our computing past, a past that was left, on purpose or not, to slowly slip into anonimity. The first section we're preparing covers the years from the 1950's to the early 1990's, from the very first pioneering efforts up to the December Revolution and the changes brought by it.
We are attempting to create a unified database which will eventually contain all the known facts about the people, the machines and the projects that, amongst all of the countries developing computers in that era, placed Romania into the top five in the world. Sadly, at this moment, information is beeing sparse, as many machines were largely undocumented, or the documentation has been lost since.
The history of computing in Romania starts in 1950, with the first attempt to build a computer in Bucharest. Four years later, two computer systems were already in existence in two distant corners of the country, in Bucharest (CIFA) and in Timişoara (MECIPT). Soon, from those two modest seeds sprouted a new industry comprising a multitude of projects, from desiging and building completely new computers, to improving the performances of those already in existence and later connecting them into ever growing networks. They were created with no outside help and no foreign contacts, due to the political situation of the time. Despite all these achievements, today most of this effort is forgotten. Documentation is systematically destroyed, the computers themselves are sent to the scrap heap or simply pushed aside by those not interested in preserving this part of our history. To stop this wilful destruction, www.romaniancomputing.eu keeps trying to salvage whatever is left.
Already, we spent several months of documentation, sorting through archives and organizing our findings into a coherent timeline. Click here to find out more about this project, and to meet the team that is trying to make sure that history is not going to be forgotten.
